Quit Smoking and Reduce Your Risk from COVID-19
Smokers who choose to quit are giving their bodies a powerful advantage in fighting infections including COVID-19.
This is the key message of this year’s national Stoptober campaign, which encourages smokers to take part in a 28-day challenge to stop smoking, supported by a wide range of free tools, advice, and resources.
With the continued presence of COVID-19, there has never been a more important time to quit. Smoking harms the airways and lungs, increasing vulnerability to infections and contributing to serious, long-term health conditions.
By quitting, individuals can begin to reverse some of this damage. Stopping smoking helps the lungs clear mucus more effectively, improving their ability to fight off infections and keeping the respiratory system as healthy as possible.
During the recent lockdowns, more than one million people across the UK successfully stopped smoking the highest number recorded in over a decade.
Locally, the Hackney Stop Smoking Service continues to provide free and confidential support to anyone ready to quit. Speak to your GP surgery for a referral or contact the service directly to start your smoke-free journey today.
